Lingerie, From Depravity to Fashion Necessity

Lingerie-- the word suggests lacey, titillating garments. But lingerie came from humble origins. The term "lingerie" is from the French linge, or linen alluding to the cloth from which underwear was by tradition made. By the end of the nineteenth century, lingerie had become a common term to describe underwear that had moved beyond sensible functions to be used as a device of for the exhibit of the female body. Lingerie was initially made for every size- including plus sizes.

However, caution was advocated at first: Lingerie should only be used by women within the confines of a happily married life. ". . . . dainty undergarments are not necessarily a sign of depravity" wrote one female fashion journalist in 1902. However, as the twentieth century progressed, the increase in the popularity and use of lingerie mirrored women's gradual freedom from the constraints of Victorian morality and notions of what constituted appropriate as they emerged as more socially independent beings. Lingerie was a departure from the rationalist and unashamedly moralistic undergarments advocated by the Victorian standards. For instance, one expert espoused the use of wool as the perfect underwear for reasons of hygiene and health.

In the beginning, handmade lingerie was a symbol of high social class, which only a few could afford. Notable were those designed by English fashion designer known as Lucile (Lady Duff-Gordon) who produced camisoles, peignoirs, and petticoats using combinations of lace, chiffon, and crepe de chine. These fabrics intentionally appealed to the sense of touch, and were the basis of a new sensuality for the 20th woman. Although artificial fibers such as rayon and nylon were marketed in the 1920s and 1930s as a luxury fabrics through the use of the name "artificial silk" their use made lingerie more affordable.

WIKIPEDIA SAYS-Nylon is a thermoplastic silky material, first used commercially in a nylon-bristled toothbrush (1938), followed more famously by women's "nylons" stockings (1940). It is made of repeating units linked by peptide bonds (another name for amide bonds) and is frequently referred to as polyamide (PA). Nylon was the first commercially successful polymer and the first synthetic fiber to be made entirely from coal, water and air.

The more body-conscious fashions of that decade also led to a new item of lingerie, the teddy, named after its inventor Theodore Baer, who combined a chemise with a short slip or attached panties. The camisole, originally derived from a decorative waist-length garment with an embroidered front and shoulder bands that were worn over the corset for warmth and modesty, became a essential piece of lingerie, later transforming into an item of outerwear by the 1970s. Similarly the slip, a standard piece of lingerie from the 1950s was used by a number of fashion designers as outerwear in the 1990s, most notably John Galliano, Dolce & Gabbana.

Pajamas, based on the loose pants worn in parts of Asia, entered women's wardrobes in the late nineteenth century, but long nightdresses remained popular, even after women's skirts shortened in the early twentieth century. By the1920s, straight-cut silk and rayon nightclothes in subtle colors such as orchid, teal and plum were popular, while the mid-century favored gowns with bosom-hugging bodices above sinuous skirts. Mixtures and superimpositions make lingerie an item of clothing in itself, so that hybrid costumes like chemise jackets and pants-skirts make up an unexpected wardrobe. During the twentieth century, alluring and luxurious lingerie grew ever more accessible and affordable.

Today there is a continuance of the lingerie revitalization started in the 1990s, with both male and female consumers. Lingerie's status as an appealing, emphatically visible component of a woman's outfit has kept sales on an upward trend. It seems that visible lingerie has become a strong style. Redefined lingerie is a reasonably priced luxury item with a powerful appeal for the style conscious plus size consumer.

Do you need to buy and wear an additional crinoline with the Maggie Sottero Rebecca wedding gown?

I'm going to order the Maggie Sottero "Rebecca" gown. The sample dress I tried on was in bad shape, so I couldn't really tell if the built in crinoline was sufficient. Do I need to purchase a crinoline (petticoat) to wear with this dress?

I hope not cuz I'm a guy and I'd look horrible in a wedding gown!

Wedding Ceremony Checklist

Okay, the big day is finally here, and in mere moments the wedding ceremony will begin! At this point, all of the big stuff should be under control, but there are still a few finishing touches to be put in place. Make sure that you do not overlook anything with this wedding ceremony checklist.

First, the maid of honor or the bride's mother should spend a few minutes carefully looking over the bridal ensemble. The bride wants to look as perfect as possible when she makes her grand entrance, after all. Check to be sure that her veil is securely anchored and the headpiece is nice and straight. What about the bridal jewelry? Are her earrings properly fastened? Have any clasps on pieces of bridal jewelry slid to the front?

Then take a good look at the wedding gown itself. Have all the layers of the petticoat been pulled straight and given a good fluff? (Crinolines are notorious for getting bunched up under a wedding gown.) If the bridal gown has those little hanging straps, be sure that they are completed tucked into the side of the gown or better yet, just cut them out. Then do the same for the bridesmaids. If the bride's dress has any bows or ribbons, make sure that they are tied perfectly and that the ends hang well. Does the bride have her something old, new, borrowed, and blue? And finally, someone should make certain that the bride does not have any lipstick on her teeth!

The groom has a few last minute tasks to undertake as well before taking his place at the altar. Is his breath fresh? If not, he can quickly pop a mint or a piece of gum. But for goodness sake, take the gum out of your mouth before the ceremony begins! I have actually witnessed grooms chewing gum while reciting their vows, and it looks absolutely terrible. Speaking of vows, if you have written your own for the ceremony, be sure you have them in your jacket pocket. The groom should also take a moment to comb his hair, straighten his tie, and adjust his boutonierre, if needed.

The wedding party should also get themselves ready before the ceremony music begins. Bridesmaids, if you need to adjust your strapless gown, this is the time to do it! Please resist the urge to tug on your dress while standing at the altar. Make sure that you have your bouquet close at hand, and that when you pick it up to process down the aisle, any bows or ribbon streamers are facing out. Like the bride, the bridesmaids should make sure that their makeup is fresh and unsmudged, and that their jewelry is secure with clasps hidden.

The best man has one incredibly important thing to check before the wedding ceremony, and that is the wedding bands. He should have them tucked into a breast pocket, ready to produce for the ring exchange portion of the ceremony. The best man can also do everyone a favor by ensuring that the groomsmen do not talk the groom into having too many celebratory drinks right before the ceremony. He would also be a good person to make sure that the troops are in order: shirts neatly tucked in, boutonierres in place, ties straight, and so on. With everyone looking their best, the wedding will be ready to go!

Help I need help with my crinoline selection!?

i am looking for a 6 hoop crinoline for my wedding dress. I really want a dress that is a big poofy princess dress that starts going out at the hips. I have two picked out but Im not sure which one will actually start at the hip. here is the website for both and if you have an experience with crinoline or think you know which one is better please let me know.

First of all, the crinoline you get depends on your dress. If the dress wasn't cut to allow lots of pouf at the hips, it won't really look right even with the crinoline. If the dress is already the right length for you and you add a crinoline it will make it too short.

My suggestion? Go to the store where you bought your dress and tell them that you want to purchase a crinoline and ask what they have/to try them on with the dress. Most stores will be happy to let you try them on, especially if the dress was bought there. You don't have to buy the hoop skirt there. Get the recommendations of the salespeople and try them on, then go home and buy it (for much less) on eBay where you have looked already.

Just by looking, it looks like the one with the blue background goes out more at the hip, but I wouldn't buy anything without trying it with my dress first to make sure it looks right.

I need to show a friend a dress i'm wrote about but i can't seem to find a similar picture anywhere.
I would love if someone sent me a html of a pic/photo of a dress that kinda resembles:
