What would you think if your saw this?

My sister in law and I get on well but we are suckers for doing silly bets and dares with each other, usually to do with wearing weird stuff. I recently won a bet where I had to wear a crinoline for a week under my skirt.
Now she has said she and her hubby will take me and my hubby out for an all expenses paid weekend in Paris if I win a dare.
She has bought a big, long old petticoat and written "penis girl" all over it.
If I wear it under my skirt for a week, I win. (it's long enough to hide it fully).
My question is this. If a gust of wind caught my skirt and gave you enough of a flash of the petticoat for you to read what was written on it how would you react. Would you just ignore it?

Someone might just try and pull your skirt down to take a better look! You never know, they might try and take your skirt completely. Imagine running off in your underwear with that written al over it!

Crinoline

Crinoline was originally a stiff fabric with a weft of horse-hair and a warp of cotton or linen thread. The fabric first appeared around 1830, but by 1850 the word had come to mean a stiffened petticoat or rigid skirt-shaped structure of steel designed to support the skirts of a woman’s dress into the required shape. In form and function it is very similar to the earlier farthingale.

An alternative origin for the word is sometimes given: the combination of the French words crin (specifically meaning horse-hair) and lin (again, meaning flax).

The crinoline was not the first accessory designed to support the wearer's skirts in the correct shape; the farthingale in its various forms was worn from the late fifteenth century through the early seventeenth century, and panniers in the eighteenth century. However, these very formal and elaborate styles were only worn at royal courts and in the highest levels of society.

After the French Revolution, French fashion turned against the elaborate styles favoured by royalty, the court, and the aristocracy. As Parisian fashion was very influential, most western European countries adopted the same styles.

Under the prevailing neoclassical influence, women’s fashions had adopted a simple style based on the simple draped garments of Ancient Greece and the togas of ancient Rome. Skirts were straight and slender, and worn with very few — if any — petticoats.

However, the silhouette did not remain that way for long, and skirt hems began to widen to give a cone shape. In the 1810s, gores began to be used in skirts again, and skirts grew wider in the 1820s. The width of these skirts was sometimes supported by a small bustle. These were not always sufficient, and so extra petticoats were worn to help.

The first 'crinolines' were petticoats starched for extra stiffness, or made out of the new crinoline fabric, and they often had ruffles to support the skirts to the desired width. However, dress fabrics were heavy but not stiff enough to support their own weight, which tended to collapse the petticoats out of shape. Extra rigidity was added to petticoats through rings of cord or braid running around the hem. In the 1830s, women started to wear petticoats with hoops of whalebone or cane around the hem.

The first hoop skirt in the US is from 1846, patent number 4,584 of David Hough, Jr. In 1858, IRJ Mann's US patent number 20,681 was the first latticework of strings and hoops.

In 1858, the American W.S. Thomson greatly facilitated the development of the cage crinoline by developing an eyelet fastener to connect the steel crinoline hoops with the vertical tapes descending from a band around the wearer’s waist. The invention was patented in the United States (patent US21581), France (patent FR41193) and Britain (patent GB1204/1859). This facilitated the fashionable silhouette's development from a cone shape to a dome. It was not an entirely original idea; Thompson was probably inspired by the open cage or frame style of farthingales and panniers.

The cage crinoline was adopted with enthusiasm: the numerous petticoats, even the stiffened or hooped ones, were heavy, bulky and generally uncomfortable. It was light — it only required one or two petticoats worn over the top to prevent the steel bands appearing as ridges in the skirt — and freed the wearer's legs from tangling petticoats.

Unlike the farthingale and panniers, the crinoline was worn by women of every social class. The wider circulation of magazines and newspapers spread news of the new fashion, also fueling desire for it, and mass production made it affordable.

The crinoline was the subject of much ridicule and satire, particularly in Punch magazine. Dress reformers did not like it either — they seized upon the cage aspect of the crinoline and claimed that it effectively imprisoned women. Given that the crinoline did eventually have a maximum diameter of up to 180 centimetres (six feet), it is easy to imagine difficulties in getting through doors, in and out of carriages, and the general problems of moving in such a large structure. However, while the crinoline needed to have a degree of rigidity, it also had a degree of flexibility. A particular kind of steel, known as spring steel or watch-spring steel, enabled the hoops to be temporarily pressed out of shape.

The second problem was the potential impropriety of the crinoline. Its lightness was a curse as well as a blessing, as a gust of wind or a knock could set it swinging and reveal the wearer's legs. Even worse, if she tripped or was knocked over, the crinoline would hold her skirts up.

The third problem was the pressure, but tight stiff corset spread the pressure.

Sitting down could be a problem if the wearer failed to spread her skirts out properly as the entire hoop contraption would fly up in her face. This embarrassing but humorous tendency is often depicted in comedies of the era.

The greatest problem with the crinoline, though, was that in some situations it was dangerous — because of its size, the wearer was often not aware of where its edges were. It was only inconvenient and annoying when a maid’s crinoline knocked a vase off a table or upset a cup, but for factory girls, there was the risk of crinolines getting caught in machinery and dragging them to be mutilated or crushed to death[citation needed]. Crinolines also burnt easily, partly because air circulated freely underneath them and partly because the fashionable dress fabrics, silk and cotton, were highly flammable.

The crinoline had grown to its maximum dimensions by 1860. However, as the fashionable silhouette never remains the same for long, the huge skirts began to fall from favour. Around 1864, the shape of the crinoline began to change. Rather than being dome-shaped, the front and sides began to contract, leaving volume only at the back. The kind of crinoline that supported this style was sometimes known as a crinolette. The cage structure was still attached around the waist and extended down to the ground, but only extended down the back of the wearer’s legs. The crinolette itself was quickly superseded by the bustle, which was sufficient for supporting the drapery and train at the back of the skirt.

Crinolines are still worn today. They are usually part of a formal outfit, such as an evening gown or a wedding dress. The volume of the skirt is not as great as during the Victorian era, so modern crinolines are most often constructed of several layers of stiff net, with flounces to extend the skirt. If there is a hoop in the crinoline, it will probably be made of plastic or nylon, which are low in cost, lightweight and flexible.

With the recent trend towards lavish weddings and grandiose bridal attire, the crinoline has started making a comeback. For her first solo collection, fashion designer Vivienne Westwood looked to the crinoline for inspiration. The collection, titled Mini Crini, featured shorter crinoline skirts with more flexible plastic hoops.

whats the difference between petticoats and Crinolines?

i am getting married and i need to buy one to make my dress fuller but i don't want to buy the one from the bridal store because I know i can find one cheaper somewhere else like eBay or a thrift store. i want the one that will give me more fullness.I am paying for our wedding so i want to save as much money as possible and any ideas will be very appreciated.

crinoline is the material petticoats are made of. find out from the bridal shop or designer of your dress what type of petticoat is best, some have layers and stuff etc. then you can google that type of petticoat or find it on ebay. but you're right, don't get it from a bridal shop or you'll get ripped off. I mean it's just a cheap underskirt you'll only wear once, it's not worth $$$!

The style of your dress is the single most important factor in creating your overall look on your wedding day. Wedding dresses can range from sleek and simple to grand and elaborate, depending on your personal taste and the statement you want to make on your big day. The silhouette of your wedding dress is the first image that your groom will see when you begin your walk down the aisle, and you want to make sure that your first impression is a memorable one. Remember that your dress is not only something special to you, but it is also something special for your groom, and you want to look your best for the both of you.

This article focuses on the five basic wedding dress styles: A-line/Princess, Empire, Mermaid/Fishtail, Ball Gown, and Column. The dress flows fluidly from the bust to the hem with an unbroken line. Due to its classic and simple style, the A-line dress is appropriate for any occasion, from a quiet backyard gathering, to a traditional church ceremony.

Dress Styles: Mermaid

The mermaid silhouette contours to the body from the chest to the knee, then flares out to the hem. This is a very sexy look that highlights the curves of a woman’s body. For this reason, you must be confident and comfortable in your skin to pull off this dramatic style.

Options: The mermaid style can support just about all necklines and sleeve lengths to reveal or cover as much skin as you desire. Since this dress is captivating by design, a high neck and long sleeves will still create an alluring look without being too sexy. If you want to show off your skin, you can opt for a strapless neckline, or a halter with a plunging v-neck to accentuate your seductive side.

The look of the mermaid dress is influenced by the various skirt styles available. The skirt can flare out above the knee, at the knee, or below the knee for slightly different silhouettes. The most important thing to keep in mind when considering a Mermaid style dress is whether or not you will feel comfortable wearing it on your big day. You may have a flawless figure perfect for this type of dress, but if you do not feel confident in it, it is not worth choosing.

Beware: Clingy slip dress such as the mermaid often reveal embarrassing underwear lines. These lines not only reveal what you are wearing under the dress, but also take away from the elegance of your overall look. It is important to keep this in mind when considering a tight fitting or body hugging dress since it may restrict what items you are actually able to wear underneath the dress.

Reincarnating the Sari Fashion Dresses

Gisele Bundchen loves the Indian sari even the Pussycat Dolls choose to go with this definite Indian flavour to the red carpet at the annual Fashion Rocks concert in New York. The sari has now fast becoming a substitute for the Little Black Dress and amazing gowns. The six yard elegance which is considered to be an Indian woman's greatest asset has witnessed a drastic makeover since its inception. From contemporary to classic designer to embroidered machine to handmade sari has become one of the most versatile garments in the world. In modern times many a known designers have changed the look of a sari restricting it not just to a 5 1/2mt drape but making it as prettier as ever.

Designers like Tarun Tahiliani and Nida Mahmood show cased the sari in new avatars at the recent Wills India Fashion Week. The sari according to them can be worn over a pair of jeans or jazzed up with a sexy slim belt for a trendy look. What's more young girls really liked these innovative styles. The designers have amazingly used Belts emphasizing on the waist adding more sexiness style and youthfulness to the entire personality. This idea of wearing saris over jeans is the interpretation of wearing a sari in a trendy manner. This is a trend that youngsters can follow for any casual party. It looks very chic and innovative especially if you are carrying the outfit with the right kind of accessories and look. Swarovski clad saris are also one of the recent trend setters as we have seen several designers using it on the runway.

Satya Paul the designer who is known for experimenting beautifully with this 6 feet drapes in 2007 showed a line of saris the Trouser Sari a pre- pleated sari with a trouser underneath. Since then designers like Anamika Khanna Sabyasachi Wendell Rod ricks Meera and Muzaffar Ali and Ravi Bajaj have all done their interpretations of sari. Sometimes edgy and trendy and sometimes easy- to- wear and comfortable the sari has transformed into many new avatars. Anamika Khanna in her Sari Spring Summer 2010 invented sari pyjamas where she used crushed muslin fabric combining the sari drape with casual pyjamas which filled in for petticoats. The sari is pleated around the right leg with a knotted pallu thrown casually over the shoulder. Next comes Sabyasachi whose chhotu saris or cropped saris as a part of his Fall-Winter 2009 collection were the ones that ended just before the ankle. The sari does not need to be pleated as it has ruches in the front and was totally dedicated to those who were weak in draping.

Menswear designer Ravi Bajaj at one of his shows in Los Angeles showcased Poncho Saris in 2009. There he made this six yard wonder more user-friendly by mixing it with traditional Japanese design. The sari which was made has a pleated skirt a neckline in the pallu which goes through the head and falls back over the shoulder giving it an effect of a poncho gown cum sari. Jai-Parvesh and Hemant-Nandita the designer duos swear by pre-pleated and lehenga saris which are easy to wear and carry at the same time. While pre-pleated saris are like skirts with pleats stitched on to them lehenga saris have a flowing silhouette below and has a heavy pallu replacing a well-draped dupatta on the left shoulder. On the international ramp the sari got its first push towards stardom when Valentino designed a sari dress for Jackie O way back in the 50s. Back in the '80s Zandra Rhodes the British fashion house took the sari and put zippers on it and combined it with a Victorian crinoline skirt. In another design she cut holes in the pallu for the arms to go through and the sari was draped over the head like a veil. In 2008, Jean Paul Gaultier designing for Hermes showed a line of sari dresses in his spring summer collection which was greatly appreciated by the Western market followed by a spring- summer line for Etro who showcased sari overalls or one piece jumpsuits with the sari drape. Freida Pinto who chose to wear a blue John Gallianosari-inspired gown with exquisite net detailing or Tina Fey hosting the show in a silver gown whose drapes took off from the Indian garment. So whether it is Jumpsuit kimono or poncho sari these classic six- yards drape is getting a twist that you can love or hate but can not ignore.

How can I keep my A-line skirts to not lose its A-line style?

I have two A-line skirts, and love A-lines because the way it shows my legs off.

A. My A-line skirt, which is actually an A-line dress, cannot go in the dryer. After wash, it must air dry.

B. My A-line skirt, which is a skirt, CAN go in the dryer. But am also willing to air dry that also if need it be.

I am not able to find crinoline/petticoat in my area thrift stores, and I looked on amazon.com, but seems a bit high, and was not able to make my own successfully, so that is out.

Any ideas on how my skirt and the skirt part of the dress to NOT go flat after washing would be of great help. Thanks! ( they both have already gone flat after its first washes).

I would suggest you hand wash them,and hang to air dry..Don't put them in the dryer..Iron in low heat....: )

A crinoline is a garment that is worn underneath a long dress to make the skirt flow out. They are better known as crinoline petticoats and they have become increasingly popular in formal weddings.

This was a popular garment during the 15th century up to the start of the 17th century. It was worn only by royalty and then spread out to other countries and classes. it's brand new with tags and includes the crinoline petticoat. size 4 completely unaltered. in ivory. retails for $550 on sale and the petticoat for $50. i paid $628 for both with tax. thanks!

Comfortable Wedding Attire for the Bride

You want to look your best on your wedding day. That is not in question. And yet, the type of attire that brides usually wear can often be as uncomfortable as they are beautiful. Is it possible to find wedding attire that is both gorgeous and comfortable enough to happily wear all day? Yes!

The wedding gown is the most important part of the bridal ensemble, and this is the one piece that will play the biggest role in your comfort level throughout the day. I remember reading that when Melania Knauss married Donald Trump, her couture wedding gown weighed something like fifty pounds! Can you imagine what it would be like to drag a fifty pound dress around on your body for an entire day? This just serves to illustrate one of the first principles when shopping for a comfy wedding gown: go for one that is lightweight. A gown can be slender and wispy, made from a few yards of chiffon. But you can also have a full and traditional dress that is light, as long as you choose your materials carefully. The lightest options for a full skirt are tulle, organza, and organdy. Satin, especially a polyester satin, will weigh you down the most.

The cut of the bridal gown is another factor in how it will feel to wear. If comfort is a priority for you, avoid a strapless gown which requires a very snug fit to stay up. You would be amazed at the difference it can make to add a little pair of spaghetti straps to a strapless gown. With your shoulders helping to support the dress, it no longer has to fit so snugly. This is not to say that the dress needs to look loose or baggy. A wedding dress with straps can look like it fits as close to the body as a strapless dress, but you will be able to take a deep breath.

What goes on under the gown also matters. If the gown you have chosen comes with a massive petticoat built in, you can always ask your seamstress to remove some of the layers of netting, or even the entire crinoline. When your preference is to keep the crinoline, take a look at how it is made; it should be lined with a soft fabric to prevent the itchy netting from scratching your legs all day.

The accessories that you select will also play a big role in your level of comfort on your wedding day. Far and away the biggest difference maker will be your shoes. Yes, those towering designer stilettos are fabulous, but do you really think that your feet will thank you for choosing them? Especially by the end of the day, you want to be certain that your feet will still be feeling good enough to dance all night. What good does it do you to have gorgeous shoes if they kill your feet so much that you have to spend half the night sitting down or take them off? A better option is to find a really pretty pair of dressy flats or even a pair of ballet slippers. If you simply must wear high heels, buy them a little bit loose, and wear an insert in them for the ceremony; as your feet swell during the reception, you can remove the insert to give you more space.

Even things like your hairstyle and choosing custom bridal jewelry will affect your comfort. Bridal jewelry that is custom made to your specifications can be sized to fit you just right so that you will not be bothered by a too-tight necklace or bracelet digging into your skin. As for your hairstyle, if you are considering wearing all of your hair up, be sure to try out the style for an entire day at some point before the wedding. Brides who have a lot of long heavy hair may find that having it all piled up on top of their heads can actually cause headaches, as can styles that are pulled too tightly. A half up style may be more comfortable for your wedding.

With these tips in mind, you will find it easier to find the bridal gown, accessories, and even the hairstyle that will maximize your comfort. After all, when you feel great, you will look your most beautiful!

What is a wedding gown with organza put into it?

My dressmaker just told me I had the option of getting a petticoat/crinoline slip or having an organza put into my dress. Which is the better option? What is organza? Will it be permanently attached to the dress?

It is a way to "poof" out the skirt. A petticoat is a separate piece of clothing . It can move around and it will add fabric/inches to your waistline as it would double the fabric. Organza sewn right into the gown, as a few separate stiffer layers of the skirt, is more expensive but a classier, more elegant way to handle the "poofy" requirement. They usually sew the organza starting below the waistline so your gown fits you more snugly where you want it! Go with the organza!!

Petticoat

A petticoat or underskirt is an article of clothing for women; specifically an undergarment to be worn under a skirt, dress or sari. The petticoat is a separate garment hanging from the waist (unlike the chemise).

In historical contexts (sixteenth to mid-nineteenth centuries), petticoat refers to any separate skirt worn with a gown, bedgown, bodice or jacket; these petticoats are not strictly speaking underwear as they were made to be seen.

In this context a petticoat may be called a waist slip or underskirt (UK) or half slip (US), with petticoat restricted to extremely full garments. Petticoat is the standard name in English for any underskirt worn as part of non-Western clothing, as with the sari.

The practice of wearing petticoats as undergarments was well established by 1585. Petticoats were worn throughout history by women who wanted to have the currently fashionable shape created by their clothing. The petticoat(s), if sufficiently full or stiff, would hold the overskirt out in a pleasingly domed shape and give the impression of a smaller waist than the wearer actually had. It would also complement the desired large bust.

Elaborately decorated petticoats were worn under open-fronted gowns and looped overskirts from the mid-sixteenth century. Eighteenth century petticoats of wool or silk were often quilted for additional warmth and were worn with matching short gowns or jackets, which could be fashioned like a man's jacket with military details and trimmings. These ankle-length petticoats remained a rural fashion, especially in the UK, into the nineteenth century and are a part of Welsh national dress.

Elaborate, lacy petticoats were worn with elegant silk dresses in the eighteenth century in much of Europe and America, sometimes supported by whalebone frames. The Laurel and Hardy film adaptation of Auber's comic opera Fra Diavolo offers a glimpse of the intricate petticoats, corsets, and other underwear worn in the eighteenth century, especially in a scene where actress Thelma Todd prepares for bed, assisted by a maid. Colored pictures, called "fashion plates," were used to advertise the popular dresses and lingerie of the eighteenth century, a practice that continued through the nineteenth century until the introduction of photography around 1840.

In the early nineteenth century, dresses became narrower and simpler with much less lingerie. Then, as the waltz became popular in the 1820s, full-skirted gowns with petticoats were revived in Europe and the United States. By the mid nineteenth century, petticoats were worn over hoops, which were placed over other underwear, including a corset cover, a corset, and drawers. The popular novel Gone with the Wind provides considerable, detailed descriptions of these fashions. One scene in the 1939 film adaptation with actress Vivian Leigh gives a good idea of the layers of petticoats and underwear that were worn in the 1860s.

The sheer weight of the clothing, along with the tightness of the corsets, sometimes caused women to faint. The voluminous, layered Victorian petticoats were not worn to hide the legs, as twentieth century commentators later claimed; they actually enhanced the stylish figure in the centuries before female attractiveness was defined in large part by how much naked leg was revealed, as has been the case since 1960.

The use of multiple petticoats continued to be popular until the 1870s, when the bustle was introduced, resulting in a return of narrower skirts. Some full-skirted gowns with petticoats were revived in the 1890s into the early twentieth century, but most women continued to wear relatively narrow skirts. The "Gibson Girl" look with white blouses and long, narrow skirts was very popular at the turn-of-the-century.

For the first two decades of the twentieth century, multiple petticoats fell out of fashion; narrow, sometimes tight, skirts became more common. Then, in the late 1920s, chiffon dresses with several sheer petticoats became fashionable. With the Great Depression in the 1930s, narrow skirts returned and petticoats again were unpopular until the end of the decade when revived for some evening, prom, and wedding gowns. World War II, with its rationing and general shortage of materials, brought an end to petticoats.

Petticoats were revived by Christian Dior in his full-skirted New Look of 1947 and tiered, ruffled, stiffened petticoats remained extremely popular during the 1950s, especially with teenage girls. Most of the petticoats were netlike crinoline, sometimes made of horsehair. Increasingly, nylon chiffon, taffeta, and organdy were used in petticoats. Many department stores carried an extensive variety of styles and colors of petticoats until the early 1960s. They were also available through the famous Sears and J.C. Penney catalogues. Typically, at least three single petticoats were worn, until manufacturers began making double and triple layer petticoats. A narrow slip was usually worn under the petticoats, especially the crinoline type, because they tended to be "scratchy".

Famed designer Edith Head designed a number of gowns and dresses, supported by multiple layers of petticoats, for actresses such as Grace Kelly and Doris Day, who appeared in Alfred Hitchcock films in the 1950s.[3] Dinah Shore frequently wore dresses with petticoats on her NBC television shows[citation needed] Actress Connie Stevens, who appeared in television series and movies, said she wore petticoats as long as possible because she had wide hips.[4] Other entertainers who often wore petticoats were Brenda Lee, Connie Francis, and Patti Page.

By the middle of the 20th century, the full petticoat was somewhat rare, having been commonly replaced by simple, ungathered underskirts/waist slips (UK) or half slips (US). However, petticoats were still worn for proms and weddings.

Ruffled white or unbleached cotton petticoats were a brief fashion under Prairie skirts in the 1970s, and remain a component of Western wear. Short, full petticoats in the 1950s style are also commonly worn by squaredancers.

There was a major attempt to revive separate petticoats in 1987. However, by that time, most women who wanted very full skirts for proms, parties, or weddings bought dresses or skirts with attached crinoline petticoats.

Lately the full, tiered petticoat has made a small comeback in the alternative subcultures, especially the gothic and Lolita subculture. They have also been popular with some cross-dressers. Various petticoats have also been used in films and musicals dealing with the 1950s, such as Grease, West Side Story, Peggy Sue Got Married, and Back to the Future, as well as occasional vintage rock music festivals, especially in Germany.[5] Although the traditional purpose for the petticoat is no longer in fashion, the general design has stayed the same with minor alterations including ripping and/or the usage of bright or generally non-traditional colors.

Petticoats are also making a comeback due to recent trends towards lavish weddings and grandiose bridal attire. Petticoats are commonly worn under bridal gowns with full skirts as a means of maintaining the gown's intended silhouette.

Also, people who dress in period costumes have begun wearing petticoats for a more authentic look. A number of websites offer a great variety of petticoats for sale, while other websites show historic and modern photographs of petticoats, often worn by models.

The everyday use of petticoats in the 1950s and early 1960s appears to have passed. Most women today dress more simply and practically. Even dresses and skirts are not as popular as they once were, with many women regularly wearing jeans and shirts or pantsuits. However, there are women (and cross-dressing men) who still like the look of a dress or skirt with petticoats, as well as the use of corsets, girdles, or garter belts with nylon stockings instead of pantyhose. Comedian Amy Sedaris has appeared on television wearing a 1950s gown with multiple petticoats.
