Most indian sarees are five to six yards long. Saris are woven with one plain end (the end that is concealed inside the wrap), two long decorative borders running the length of the sari, and a one to three foot section at the other end which continues and elaborates the length-wise decoration. This end is called the pallu; it is the part thrown over the shoulder in the Nivi style of draping. It is one of the most visible sections of the sari and is woven and decorated "for show".

More expensive saris had elaborate geometric, floral, or figurative ornament created on the loom, as part of the fabric. Sometimes warp and weft threads were tie-dyed and then woven, creating gorgeous bridal baluchari patterns. Sometimes threads of different colors were woven into the base fabric in patterns – an ornamented border, an elaborate pallu, and often, small repeated accents in the cloth itself on various qualities of silk, cotton, georgette, chiffon etc. These accents are called buttis or bhutties (spellings vary). For fancy saris, these patterns could be woven with gold or silver thread, which is called zari work. Modern zari work is usually executed with glittering synthetic fibers rather than real gold or silver thread (made by wrapping gold or silver around a base thread).

Sometimes the saris were further decorated, after weaving, with various sorts of embroidered works. Resham, zari or zardousi work is embroidery done with colored silk, golden, copper or silver thread for gorgeous bridal or wedding sarees or dulhan saris. Zardozi embroidery uses gold and silver thread and sometimes pearls and non-precious stones. Cheap modern versions of zardozi use synthetic metallic thread and imitation stones, such as fake pearls, sequin beads and Swarovski crystals.
The word 'sari' is believed to derive from the Sanskrit word 'sati', which means strip of cloth. This evolved into the Prakrit 'sadi' and the sound later decayed into 'sari'.

Some versions of the history of Indian clothing trace the sari back to the Indus valley civilization, which flourished in 2800-1800 BCE. One ancient statue shows a man in a draped robe which some sari researchers believe to be a precursor of the sari.

Ancient Tamil poetry, such as the Silappadhikaram and the Kadambari by Banabhatta, describes women in exquisite drapery. This drapery is believed to be a sari. In the Natya Shastra (an ancient Indian treatise describing ancient dance and costumes), the navel of the Supreme Being is considered to be the source of life and creativity. Hence the stomach of the dancer is to be left unconcealed, which some take to indicate the wearing of a sari.

Odissi dancer wearing a fishtail wrap.Some costume historians believe that the men's dhoti, which is the oldest Indian draped garment, is the forerunner of the sari. They say that until the 14th century, the dhoti was worn by both men and women.

Sculptures from the Gandhara, Mathura and Gupta schools (1st-6th century CE) show goddesses and dancers wearing what appears to be a dhoti wrap, in the "fishtail" version which covers the legs loosely and then flows into a long, decorative drape in front of the legs [1]. No bodices are shown.

Other sources say that everyday costume consisted of a dhoti or lungi (sarong), combined with a breast band and a veil or wrap that could be used to cover the upper body or head. Some argue that the two-piece Kerala mundum neryathum (mundu in malayalam is the same as dhoti or sarong and neryath means a cloth to cover the upper body similar to a shawl) is a survival of ancient Indian clothing styles, and that the one-piece sari is a modern innovation, created by combining the two pieces of the mundum neryathum.

It is generally accepted that wrapped sari-like garments, shawls, and veils have been worn by Indian women for a long time, and that they have been worn in their current form for hundreds of years.

It is possible that the researchers arguing for a recent origin for the choli and the petticoat are extrapolating from South India, where it is indeed documented that in some areas, women wore only the sari and exposed the upper part of the body. Poetic references from works like Shilappadikaram indicate that during the sangam period in ancient South India, a single piece of clothing served as both lower garment and head covering, leaving the bosom and midriff completely uncovered. In Kerala there are many references to women being topless, including many pitcures by Raja Ravi Varma. Even today, women in some rural areas do not wear cholis.

Long hairstyles for the bride...any ideas?

I have long..passed the middle of my back, blonde hair that is only lightly layered around the face from ear to chin. I want to find a hairstyle where I can either keep my hair down or possibly the half up half down look. I will be wearing a jeweled headband and elbow length veil. Could you guys send me some links to hair styles that would look good? Below are the links to my dress, veil and headband. Thanks so much.

My hair isn't quite as long as your hair, but I wore my hair all down in waves. Everyone told me to do something different with my hair because I always wear it down. I went to my trial and we tried a half up style - I hated it because it definitely wasn't me. You can always add a nice curl/wave to your hair and wear it all down. I think it is a soft look - can't really go wrong with it. Mine looked a lot like this (except I had an elbow length veil and headpiece similar to yours):

The Proper Morning Wedding Etiquette

A good advice for making a wedding romantic and truly special is to make the ceremony debt-free and low-key as possible. Couples should save their money and not pay much attention to wedding advices features in magazines. Love is basically between the couple that will be getting married so its best they focus on each other.

A morning wedding followed by a luncheon reception is ideal, as it will give the couple enough time for their honeymoon, starting a new life and have enough energy to perform immediate post-wedding activities. Over 200 guests waiting at an expensive sit-down dinner will not add anything special to the romance.

A morning wedding will also help the couple save money and their eager energy and more than half a day to savor the moment of finally getting hitched.

Etiquette in a morning wedding

A morning wedding can be formal, semi-formal or informal. The bride can be outfitted with a short wedding dress or suit. In a formal morning wedding, the bride's gown should touch the floor and veil fingertip or slightly below the middle knuckle of the mid finger. A fingertip veil becomes more attractive when it is used with an elbow length blusher. For a semi-formal morning wedding, the gloves and blusher veils are optional.

The groom's attire is typically composed of a business, sportcoat or morning suit in accordance to the level of formality. In a semi-formal morning wedding, proper etiquette dictates that the groom can sport a dark stroller or suit without black or gray tails. In a formal wedding, a morning suit, which is composed of gray pinstripe trousers, ascot, gray vest and a cutaway coat, is suffice. The groom also has the option to wear a tuxedo if he wants to.

The groom and bride's attire should complement each other. If the bride is wearing a casual short wedding dress, then the groom should wear a business suit or sportcoat instead of a tuxedo.

Regardless whether the wedding is during the morning or late in the evening, there is a certain etiquette that should be followed in the ceremony. <br><br>

- Bridesmaids and groomsmen should assist in the ceremonies if the morning wedding is not held strictly in private.

- The bridesmaids should not have dresses that is not too eye-catching but will match the wedding dress. In addition, they should be younger than the bride. The dresses can contain more ornaments and should consist of light, graceful fabric. Flowers should serve as the main decoration.

- The wedding dress should be simple but elegant and can be decorated with few ornaments or jewels that come from the parents or the bridegroom. The dress needs to have an attractive veil and garland.

- The bride needs to be assisted by her bridesmaids in wearing the wedding dress, receiving visitors and locate themselves at her left side. The first bridesmaid for easy access should keep the bouquet and gloves.

- The clergyman should be received by the groomsmen and led to the couple that will be married. They will also serve as assistants for the bridegroom, during the occasion.

- Guests should wear something light and fresh. A breezy dress or a light-colored suit would be appropriate. Those who are fond of hats are in luck in a morning wedding, as wearing one will complement the ease and energy of the ceremonies. Dark suits and dresses should be avoided.

The Wedding Breakfast

If the bride appears during breakfast proper etiquette dictates that she sits beside her husband at the center table, while the father and mother occupy the top to bottom and greets the guests coming in. Once the cake has been cut and every one has eaten, which include offering a toast to the new couple and giving acknowledgements, the bride and groom meet with their friends and eventually exit from the ceremony.

The newly-married couple can start in their wedding journey at around two or three o'clock, while the rest of the guests and family member depart from the reception area shortly after.

cheap place to find bridal ivory colored tiara and/or veil??

Hi! I'm trying to find a cheap-ish, but pretty ivory tiara & veil. I'd really love to have some sort of floral design, with flowers and pearls or something with the tiara. Prefered not a big tiara..nothing too outlandish. I tried on, and fell in love with a tiara at Davids Bridal but it's $200 same thing with the veil! Looking for a veil that's about elbow length, two tier. If anyone has any ideas, please help!! thanks!! my wedding dress pictures are on my myspace at http://www.myspace.com/brighteyesfiremouth . The veil I tried on was a little too yellowish..maybe a light ivory or "diamond" white..off white would be good..no floral designs wanted on the veil like the one I tried on, it was just too much!! thanks again!

Wearing Your Bridal Tiara and veil

When trying on tiaras remember that your hair will (usually) be different on your wedding day to your usual style. Remember to hold your hair up behind the tiara to give a background to the tiara and get an idea how it will look.

A tiara just put on top of your head when your hair isn’t done can look odd but a tall tiara will look fabulous with hair piled behind it.

It is often easier to wear a tiara if your hair is put up but can easily be worn with your hair down because your hairdresser can easily secure the tiara in your hair with hair grips, twists of hair etc.

Some tiaras have little loops at each end of the band so are easily secured in your hair but the plain bands can still be firmly attached and if you go to a hairdresser who is experienced in doing ‘bridal hair’ they can fix your tiara so it will stay in place all day long.

Some tiaras have combs at each end of the band and while this sounds good in theory we have found that they are in practice often very uncomfortable, depending on the shape and size of your head and the positioning of the combs.

We dropped tiaras with combs from our range as most customers did not find them at all comfortable to wear. The tiaras with combs on the ends tend to be the cheaper mass produced ones made in China that you will see on so many sites.

Wearing Your Veil

Veils can be single layer, double or triple layer depending on how much fullness you want.

The most popular lengths for veils are 54 (approximately to waist) and 72 (approximately to hip level) although full length and chapel and cathedral length are becoming popular. Two layers are generally more popular with the short top layer that can worn over the face. Veils are generally attached to a comb. The two main ways of wearing a veil are on the top of the head, just behind the tiara or at the back of the head. The veil worn at the back of the head will then drape behind you and not around your shoulders.

A one layer veil will be a less expensive option and can be bought in different lengths. British veil designers offer their veils in any length you wish for a small extra charge.
