Proper etiquette for Engagement/Shower/Wedding Gifts?

If a couple has an engagement party and attendees give gifts that usually are given at the bridal shower, e.g. toasters, luggage, crystal wine glasses, etc., Does this eliminate a bridal shower? Some people are saying yes while others are saying have a shower but have a Honeymoon fund type thing. I need to know the proper etiquette for this situation. Any opinions/advice would be greatly appreciated.

It is not proper etiquette to throw a shower yourself or ask someone to throw one regardless of whether you have an engagement party.

If someone offers to throw you a shower and asks for your input on what type you would like, then you get to decide. If you got alot of what you need at your party, make it a cents and scents party or honeymoon theme party(have the invitiation say honeymoon fund) or lingere, etc. If no one asks to throw you a shower, then don't throw yourself one. If they want to throw you a shower, but don't ask your input, don't tell them how you want it. The two latter things would be rude.
