Bridal Alterations

When you buy your wedding dress make sure that you know if you can have it in different lengths. Most designers do dresses in at least two lengths so make sure the shop orders the right one for you. It is essential that you wear the same height heel as you will for your wedding and the same hooped petticoat. The shop should either lend or hire you a petticoat cheaply but if they insist you buy then look online. The site with the best prices is www.princesssparkle.co.uk, If you are under about 5’7” you may well need the hem to be taken up which can be complicated. If the hem has beading or lace on it all the beads will have to be removed and then replaced when the hem has been taken up. Most bridal gowns have horsehair braid (don’t worry it isn’t made of horsehair!) in the hems and this has to be unpicked and then replaced. All of these tasks are lengthy and a dressmaker may charge up to £20 an hour to do alterations.

If you are bottom heavy you may well find that the bodice stands out from your bust because of the boning. Ask the shop if the dress can be altered to fit on your bust and roughly how much will it cost. Again if the dress has beading or lace this all will have to be removed and then replaced. The bones in the bodice may also have to be removed and replaced. You may well find yourself with a bill for £200 which you will not have budgeted for.

When trying on dresses try to find one that fits as nearly perfectly as possible and will need little or no alteration. Try on different styles by different designers and you may find a style that suits your figure perfectly.

Some designers will make to fit you exactly and will make a toile initially which the shop can fit to you perfectly then the dress will require no alterations. This will cost more than if you buy off the peg since the dress will most likely be made in the UK.

If you buy a sale dress remember that it can only be taken in by one size with no problem. Two sizes start to cause difficulty in that the shape of the bodice will be thrown out. The bones will have to be moved and the alteration may cost so much that you could have bought one in your own size. Don’t be fooled into believing that a dress can be taken in by two sizes easily.

If the dress is just a little too large then you may be able to use Sticky Straps to stick the dress to your bra. This may sound strange but Sticky Straps are a bit like wig tape or double sided sticky tape but far more effective. They were developed purely for repairs and saving you alterations. They are hypoallergenic and can be stuck to your skin. They really are very effective and in all the years I have run a bridal shop they have proved to be very effective and saved bride’s money on alterations. They can be used to secure hems that come undone and you can have a few with you at the wedding for emergency repairs. If a bridesmaid treads on the hem of her dress they can be used for an instant repair. Much easier than trying to mend with a safety pin!
